We will host a Habitat III Side Event
at Habitat III in
Quito Ecuador on
20th October 2016 @ 11.00hrs - 12.00hrs Room R7
with an opening address by
Hon. Professor Anna Kajumulo Tibaijuka,
Member of Parliament for Muleba South, Tanzania, Retired UN Under-Secretary-General and Former Chief of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-HABITAT (2000-2010), Special Envoy for the UPU worldwide initiative "Addressing the World – An Address for Everyone”.
"WHEN YOU GIVE A PERSON A POSTAL ADDRESS YOU GIVE THAT PERSON AN IDENTITY AND IMPROVE HIS OR HER LIFE"
Having a physical unique postal address enables a citizen to partake with relative ease in everyday activities such as receiving social welfare entitlements, healthcare services, or utility supply, opening a bank account, attending schools, receive mail and deliveries, or even to run a business. However nearly 1 billion people worldwide live in urban slums without unique postal addresses.
We will show at this side event how any person who does not have a unique address, and especially those living in slums, may have one, quickly and
economically. The event addresses issues in HABITAT III ISSUE PAPERS 22 – INFORMAL SETTLEMENTS, and also addresses SDG GOAL 11.1 and 11.3.
We will be supported on stage by UN Habitat Urban Basic Services as well as Slum Dwellers International (http://www.sdinet.org/).
The event outcomes we expect are:
City planners (especially those in charge of the urban slums) will find our methods useful to provide unique postal addressing in slums. This unique postal addressing will provide them with the information needed (maps, census) to plan more accurately, transparently and in a non discriminative manner, any slum upgrading activity
NGOs involved in the welfare of slum dwellers will find our methods useful to provide unique postal addressing in slums. This unique postal addressing will provide them with the information needed (maps, census) to better plan their activities and report to their donor base more accurately their social impact.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: City planners, NGOs working in slums, Mayors, Parliamentarians, Foundations, Post Offices, Logistics, Delivery and Courier Companies.
SPEAKERS: Alex Pigot, CEO, Addressing the Unaddressed, Farouk Braimah, CEO at Peoples Dialogue on Human Settlements (and representing SDI), Graham Alabaster, Urban Basic Services Branch United Nations Human Settlements Programme
(Please note that our side event is scheduled to take place on 20 October 2016, from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. in room R7 at the venue of the Habitat III Conference, Casa de la Cultura Ecuatoriana "Benjamin Carrion". )
